Support - Guest Book

Adhost offers to its clients the use of a World Wide Web based guestbook. The guestbook allows users to sign and leave information and to view previous entries from other guests.

In order for the guestbook to function properly, you need to download three (the third- guestlog.html is optional and isn't necessary) .html files to your website directory or subdirectory

Download

The easiest way to download the files is to use your browser:

  1. View the file in your browser.
  2. Go to "File" then "Save as" and save the file onto your machine.
  3. This will download the file to your local hard-drive.
  4. Open the files in a simple text editor (Notepad, BBedit, etc.)
  5. Make the necessary changes.
  6. FTP the files back to your website directory on the appropriate Adhost machine (contact us for FTP help). Remember to transfer them in ASCII mode.
  7. Once the files have been uploaded, you will need to change the permissions on the guestbook.html and guestlog.html files.

To change the permissions on the guestbook.html and guestlog.html files follow the directions below:

  1. Secure Shell (SSH2) to your site. (the "adhost%" below signifies the command line once you've established a SSH2 connection to your account):
  2. adhost% cd to your guestbook directory (if necessary)
  3. copy the following files and paste them into your directory
  4. adhost% chmod 666 guestbook.html
  5. adhost% chmod 666 guestlog.html

The guestbook .html files

Please note: The guestbook files are examples to be downloaded only! When viewing these files you won't see any actual guestbook entries or logs and you will not be able to submit a new entry.

(To try our fully functional Sample Guestbook)

guestbook.html - This is the actual guestbook, the file that is written to each time a guest signs it. You can edit this any way you like, just remember that new data will be placed after the line that reads:
BEWARE! Some HTML editors (notably MS FrontPage) will remove your tag! This will break your guestbook.

Solution? Use a simple text editor (like NotePad or BBedit) to edit your guestbook.html.

addguest.html - This is the file that contains the form that a guest will fill out in order to add to the guestbook.

  1. You MUST edit the 4th line and put your domain in the VALUE slot. (ie, NAME="domain" VALUE="abc-inc.com").
  2. You also MUST edit the 5th line and put the path to your website in the VALUE slot. If you decide to put the guestbook files in a subdirectory (for example, "abc-inc/guestbook"), specify that in the same line; NAME="path" VALUE="abc-inc/guestbook".

Beware what else you change in this file! Don't change any of the other FORM lines, or at least don't change any of the NAME values and expect it to still work.

guestlog.html - It just keeps a list of the port address of each caller, and any errors that occurred. You should not have to edit this very often, if at all. If you don't want or need this log, just don't download this file. If it doesn't exist, it will not be created.
