Support - Real Video

This page shows how to add Real Video streams to your pages. These procedures will only work as described for Adhost clients only.

Follow the directions below to add Real Video Streams to your website.

Step One - Requesting a Real Server account

If you have not requested an account on our RealServer you may do so now. You will need this account to send files to this server and stream audio from it. To request a Real Server Account please send an email to sales@adhost.com.

Step Two - Create your .rm file

For more information on how to do this, visit Realnetworks.com.

Step Three - Creating your .RAM file

If you upload the file that Real Encoder outputs and then link to that file, the visitor's real player will have to download the entire file, then it will begin to play. The benefit of streaming is that they can go forward and backwards in the file with very little buffering. To accomplish this "streaming" we must somehow tell the visitor's computer how to process this file.

The standard protocol when creating streaming links is to open up a text editor and create a RAM file. The only information this file should contain is the rtsp://real.adhost.com/domain/rmfilename.rm location, where 'domain' is your domain name without the extension (i.e. .com, .org, .net), and 'rmfilename.rm' is the Real Audio file you want to have playing in the stream.

Step Four - Uploading your files

This process is much like adding an image to your pages yet you will be putting these files on two different servers.

The .RA or .RM file needs to go to real.adhost.com
The .RAM file needs to go to www.yourdomain.com

With your FTP client open you should first connect to the real.adhost.com server. Login with your Real Server username and password. Once connected, upload the .RA or .RM file you have created to this server.

Disconnect from this server and re-connect to your domain name. Login with your domain username and password. Once you have connected, upload the small .RAM file to your domain name. You may also want to add the link to your audio while connected in this session. See Step 5.

Step 5 - Adding a link to your page

At the top of this page you can click on a link that brings up a Real Audio file. This was created using the steps listed above. We then had to create a link to the .RAM file we created so the user could play the sound.

Upload the changed page or pages to the server with these links on them and your visitors are ready to "listen" to your pages!
