What are Dynamic Web Pages?

A page that does anything but sit still could be called dynamic. This could include animated gifs, flash files, javascript and DHTML. However, what we will be covering here are Server Side Scripting Languages, interfaced with an online database.

What are Server Side Scripting Languages?

Server Side Scripting Languages include ASP, ColdFusion, PHP, and anything else that has its code ran BEFORE the page is sent to your browser for viewing. We mostly use ColdFusion at Adhost, but the below examples of use are possible with any Server Side Scripting Languages.

Note: JavaScript is a very good example of the opposite of Server Side Scripting (Client side scripting). The code is sent to your browser intact, and your browser executes the code.

What can I do with this technology?

Sell online
Online Inventory catalogs, Shopping carts, sales forms, etc... are the most popular use of databases on the web.
Keep rosters online
Keep your company or organization's members online and current.
Generate information by day
Keeping a current calendar of events and meetings is now possible. Merely put the information in when you get it, and the code will tell it when to display.
Share work documents with an Intranet
Many companies are finding that their employees benefit from having an Intranet (web site accessible only in their office) set up to share working documents, keep employee manuals, schedules, etc....
Never learn HTML
Because the information is coming from the database, only the database will need to be updated for most changes. Once the site is set up, with an administration interface for updating the database, the person in charge of keeping the site updated will not have to learn how to code.
