Support - Traceroute

(note: These instructions are for PC use. We are currently developing trace route plans for the Mac.)

Trace Routes are a useful tool for the Adhost Tech Support Services team when determining loading errors with client web sites. Running a trace route further helps answer the question, "why is my site loading slowly".

Preferred Trace Route Method

  1. Begin an MS-DOS session. This can be done by clicking the start button, highlight to programs, and then select MS-DOS Prompt
  2. You need to be in "C:\WINDOWS" directory
  3. Type in "tracert yourdomainname.com > c:\WINDOWS\Desktop\tracert.txt"
  4.

  5. This will save a text file (tracert.txt) to your desktop.
  6. Attach the file in an Email and send it to support@adhost.com

Alternate Trace Route Method

(note: The above method is preferred because a .txt file is much smaller in size than is a .jpeg file, which is made below.)

  1. Begin an MS-DOS session. This can be done by clicking the start button, highlight to programs, and then select MS-DOS Prompt
  2. You need to be in "C:\\WINDOWS" directory
  3. Type in "tracert yourdomainname.com"
  4.

  5. Once the trace route is performed and is similar looking to the screen shot above, take a picture of your desktop by pressing alt+Print Screen
  6. Open the Paint program which can be found by clicking the start button, highlight to programs, and then highlight accessories, and select Paint
  7. Once in the Paint program select Edit, then Paste, After the MS-DOS box is pasted in save this file to your desktop. Please save in the JPEG format.
  8. Attach the file in an email and send it to support@adhost.com
