Merchant Support - Threshold

Threshold Charging is based on the purchase amount and allows the creation of multiple shipping types, though in Threshold Charging "Types" are called "Classes" and the process differs from that in Base+Product / UPS. Briefly to set up Threshold Charging you would:

  1. Create Shipping Classes
  2. Add Handling Charges.
  3. Define Threshold Levels per Class.
  4. Add Additional Rates for AK and HI (Domestic Only).

Each of these steps is described below.

Create Shipping Classes:

  • Enter a name for this Shipping Class - Standard, Express, Ground, etc.
  • Select "Local" (Domestic) or "International".1
  • Enter a description - "Shipped Same Day", "2-3 Days", "Not Available on Flag Day", etc.
  • Enter a sort order. "This one comes after" presumes you will have more than one class. If not, or if you don't know which order you want them in yet, just select "None - First in list" which would put the class you are configuring at the top of a list of available classes.
  • Enter a handling charge (optional) and hit save.

The page will refresh and you will see the class below the add Class box. You may now finish setting up this class or add additional classes. To finish, proceed to Define Threshold Levels per Class. To add additional classes (which you may finish configuring later) repeat the steps above.

Users with a shipping country other than the USA will see all classes defined as "International". Threshold shipping does not recognize and present options based on individual countries. Such granularity is available in the Base+Product / UPS shipping module.

Handling Charge

Enter a handling charge to be applied to each order over and above the ship charges. This is optional. If entered, it will display on the shipping selection page of Checkout as, for example: "Note: a $15.00 handling fee is applied to each order." It will also display as a separate line item in the order. The handling charge is considered part of the taxable total when taxes are applied.

Define Threshold Levels per Class:

  • Choose whether or not to accept Hawaii and Alaska as valid destinations for the class(Available in Domestic classes only).2
  • Select Active or Inactive for the class (Whether or not it is exposed to your customers).
  • Set your Thresholds:
    • Enter the first cutoff value - i.e. $50.00.
    • Enter the amount to be charged for any order for which the subtotal is between zero and 50 dollars.
    • Click Save. Another Threshold level line will appear.
    • Enter additional levels till done. Click Save after each addition and a new Threshold level line will appear.
  • Enter an amount to be added to your last defined threshold ("Above Rate Plus") for additional dollar multiples ("For each Additional"). Click Save. NOTE: If you don't want additional charges added for orders over the levels you have already specified, enter "0.00" in the "Above Rate Plus" box and an amount in the "For each Additional" box (Example: "100.00"). No additional charges will be applied

Alaska and Hawaii:

Enter the additional charge, if any, that will be added for Alaska and Hawaii for each Domestic Zone you have created. This charge will be added to the normal charge for the zone for users with ship states in AK or HI. All rates defined for Alaska and Hawaii users will display with the defined surcharge included. No special notice is given that additional rates are being assessed. Rates that are selected as not available to AK and HI do not display to users with AK or HI as the state in their ship address.

International Destinations:

For International shipping, list the applicable countries for each zone you create in the description field and proceed as above to set your thresholds. Note that as mentioned above, Threshold shipping does not recognize and present options based on individual countries other than recognizing non-US shipping addresses as international. Per country granularity is available in the Base+Product / UPS shipping module.
