FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is an easy, secure way to exchange files over the Internet. Many people use FTP to download files such as MP3s and online games from the Internet. It also allows you to transfer files back-and-forth when creating a Web page and loading it to a Web server.

When you use FTP, you are transferring the file to your computer from another computer over the Internet. An FTP address looks like normal Web address except it uses the prefix ftp:// instead of http://.

To access an FTP site you'll need a UserID and Password. To connet using FTP, you can use a Web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.) or an FTP software program, known to as an FTP 'Client' (WSFTP, CuteFTP, Fetch etc.). FTP uploads are difficult with a Web browser and are not recommended for large files. We recommend that you use an FTP client to transfer files to your Web site directory.

What is an FTP Client?

An FTP Client software allows you to transfer files between your computer and a Web server. You need to be install the software on your computer and it can only be used with a live connection to the Internet.

Typically FTP software displays the files on your computer on the left side of its display and the files on the remote computer on the right side. It's easy to drag and drop a files from one side to the other or by highlighting a file and clicking one of the direction arrows located between the panes.
