FTP Access Hints

Uploading files to your website is easy with FTP. You can choose to download an FTP client such as SmartFTP, WS_FTP, FileZilla; or you can upload via internet Explorer.

If you're using an FTP client, follow these steps to access your webspace to upload your site:

  1. Set your address to [yourdomain.com], replacing [yourdomain.com] with the name of your Internet domain and extension. You do not need to include a www in front or it.
  2. Set your username and password to the username and password that were sent to you in separate emails.
  3. Generally, you will not need to specify a port. If you do, use port 21.
  4. If the program asks for a mode or gives you the option to let the server decide between active and passive move, it's usually best to let the server decide which mode to use. If you have to choose between then, try one. If it doesn't work, try the other. Switching modes between connections will not damage your files, so don't worry about causing problems with this setting. If neither mode works, continue on.
  5. If you are unable to connect using [yourdomain].com, try ftp.[yourdomain.com]. Some AdHost servers require the ftp prefix to conect to their FTP servers.

Once connected, you should see two panels. On one side (usually the left or bottom) is your hard drive. On the other side is your webspace. Navigate through your hard drive to the directory where the files for your web site are held, and select them. Most current FTP clients have an "Upload" button that will send all highlighted files from your hard drive to the server. Check your FTP client's documentation for more help.

You can also use Internet Explorer to navigate, upload, and manage your FTP files, but it is much more cumbersome. To connect to your FTP webspace in Internet Explorer, follow these steps:

  1. In the address bar, type in ftp://[username]@[yourdomain.com]/. Replace [username] with the username AdHost mailed you previously, and replace [yourdomain.com] with yuor domain name and extension.
  2. Internet Explorer will ask you for your password. This was sent to you in a previous mailing.
  3. If the connection is successful, the Internet Explorer screen will look a lot like a Windows Explorer screen, with your files and directories displayed graphically, like you were navigating your Documents folder.
  4. If the connection isn't successful, try ftp://[username]@ftp.[yourdomain.com]/.

To upload files from your hard drive to your FTP space via Internet Explorer, click on the Start button and click on My Computer. Navigate in that screen until you reach the directory with your website files. Select all the files, right click, and choose Copy from the context menu. Switch to the Internet Explorer screen, right click in an empty area, and choose Paste.

Internet Explorer lacks the features of a dedicated FTP client - resuming downloads, multiple connections, active/passive mode switching; features especially important if you're conecting to the Internet via dial-up. if you're using Mozilla Firefox, you will need a dedicated FTP client, as Firefox does not allow users to do anything but view the contents of an FTP site. Whatever option you choose though, learn the program and the doumentation. We at AdHost Support can troubleshoot your ability to connect to your FTP site through your client and provide basic suggestions, but we cannot troubleshoot individual programs.
