Publishing with the Microsoft® FrontPage® 2000 Server Extensions

Okay! You've finished designing your Web site in FrontPage, and now you're ready to publish. This month's HTML Tip will help users with the FrontPage Server Extensions move their FrontPage site onto the Web.

First of all, what are the FrontPage Server Extensions? The FrontPage Server Extensions are a collection of scripts and programs that allow Internet Web servers to interact smoothly with the FrontPage software on your computer. A few FrontPage features such as forms, hit counters and publishing are made easier when combining the capabilities of both FrontPage softwares.

Getting Ready to Publish

Publishing is the term used by FrontPage designers to describe the process of moving the FrontPage Web site from their computer to the Internet Web server. Before publishing begins, there are a few items of information that you should already have next to you.

• The address of your Web site or your domain name. ( i.e., http://www.yourname.com)
• Username and Password for the Internet Web server.

To begin this process, Connect to the Internet. Also, the FrontPage Web that you want to publish must be open (see note), and you must be in the FrontPage Explorer window.

Note: To open your FrontPage Web, go to the Start menu -- Programs -- and select Microsoft FrontPage. Once FrontPage is open, you will get a Getting Started window. In that window, you will find a list of Webs you have created. Select the Web you want to publish and Click OK.

The Process

Once you are in the FrontPage Explorer window, go to the FILE menu and choose Publish FrontPage Web.

This Publish window will show up.

To specify where you want your Web site to be published, click on the More Webs... button on the top right hand corner of the above window. The following step will require you to specify the location of where you want to publish. In the text box of the following window, type in the URL or Internet address you want to publish to (i.e., http://www.yourname.com)

Once you have entered the address and clicked ok, you will return to the Publish window. The selected item will display the Internet address beneath the white box. Verify that the selected item is the address you just typed and if it is spelled and typed correctly. When you have verified it, click OK. You will then be prompted for your username and password.

Type in your information, and click OK. Your Web will then begin publishing. Its progress in percentage value can be viewed in the lower right hand corner of the FrontPage Explorer window.

Publish Complete

Once it the status bar on the FrontPage Explorer window has stated that publishing has been completed, go ahead and browse to your Web site using your Internet Browser.

Congratulations! You have published your Web site!
