Support - Using Telnet to test your email connection

This page will instruct you how to test your email connection by using the Telnet command:

  1. Please go to 'Start'>'Run' and type 'cmd' (without the quotes) and enter:

     

     

  2. If you are having problems sending only then complete steps 3-4. If you are having problems receiving only then complete steps 5-6. If you are using Windows Vista, telnet isn't installed by default. For instructions on setting this up, visit Windows IT Pro . If you are using a Mac please open your hard drive. Select "Applications", then "Utilities", and run Terminal.
  3. If you are having problems sending, please connect to Adhost's sending port by typing 'telnet mail.adhost.com 25' like this:

     

     

  4. A successful result will show '220' then the name of an Adhost Mail server:

     

     

  5. If you are having problems receiving, please connect to Adhost's receiving port by typing 'telnet mail.adhost.com 110' like this:

     

     

  6. A successful result will show '+OK Dovecot' then the name of an Adhost server:

     

     

  7. If you don't get either of these successful messages, then there is a blockage of one or more of your email ports. You are advised to contact your local network administrator.
