Support - POP before SMTP

If you are having problems sending email out and getting a message that says "Relay access denied," this may be caused by the way our outgoing mail servers decide who is allowed to send email out and who is not.

This is referred to as "POP before SMTP." What this means is that when you check for new email on mail.adhost.com, you are using a username and password which logs into our servers. When this is done, our systems also check what your IP address is and stores this in our database every time you check email.

For the next hour our system will use that IP address to determine whether or not you are allowed to send email out through our server. After that hour is up, if you have not checked your email again within that time, our server will remove that IP address until the next time you check email.

To avoid the "Relay access denied" messages, there are a couple of steps you can take:

1. If you know you are going to be composing long messages, before you send the message just click "Send/receive" or "Get Mail." This will register the IP address before you send it.

2. If you have message stuck in your outbox, you can move them over to your drafts folder. Then press "Send/receive" again. Let the email program check email, then move the messages back into the outbox. They should now send.

3. Some email clients have the ability to check email when you send automatically; this will do the same thing. You can search for "Check before sending" or "POP before SMTP" and turn that switch "on" in your email client.

4. Using our Webmail system, you will not have this issue.
