Support - Administering MS Access

When using a Microsoft Access database on a Windows web server there are certain steps you need to take to make sure that your data is secure and that your application will run smoothly. Most often you will want to not only read data, but also write data to your database. Since your database will be somewhere under your web root, it is accessible via a web browser by anyone that can view your site. Certain changes need to be made to ensure these are properly handled.

Please do the following when using an MS Access database:

  1. Upload the database to its own directory (on Windows servers only) under your site (named "db", "database", etc). You may download and upload your database to this directory, but do not remove this directory without notifying Adhost.
  2. Email support@adhost.com with a request to:
    1. Remove web-read access [which removes the possibility of the world being able to download or view your database].
    2. Give read/write access to the database directory (from step one) [This will allow your database to be written to by your web application].
  3. Do not store full, un-encrypted credit card numbers, social security numbers or sensitive information.
  4. Adhost recommends using OLEDB connection strings. Please see here for more info.
