Support - Administering MS-SQL

When using an MS-SQL database, you can use Microsoft SQL 2000 Enterprise Manager for MS SQL2000 databases or SQL Server 2005 Management Studio (or the Express version) for connections to SQL2005 databases. Both tools will work for SQL 2000 databases however SQL Server 2005 Management Studio (or the Express version) will work only for SQL 2005 databases. In addition, both Express editions can be downloaded from the Microsoft web site.

To connect using either application, you will need to know the following:

  • SQL dbo username (typically in the form of 1234.sql)
  • password
  • database name
  • server name (must be a fully qualified domain name i.e. f1-sql01.adhost.com)

Adhost provided this information for you in your site activation welcome letter however if you didn't receive this letter or accidentally deleted it then please contact support@adhost.com.

Other Important Information:

  • Make sure that TCP/IP is the primary protocol in the Client Network Utility portion of SQL server versus named pipes. The port is default of 1433.
  • Furthermore, we have upgraded our MS SQL security. In order to connect to our MSSQL Servers when using either application Adhost will need to allow your IP address through the SQL firewall. You will need to fill out the form at the bottom of submit your ip address.
  • Since adding your IP address can take up to 24 hours, we also offer a MSSQL web interface application to help you manage your MS SQL database. However, this tool will only work with SQL 2000 databases
  • Connection Strings:
    • Due to the architecture of the Adhost Network, host names for the SQL 2000 are different than those used for SQL 2005 databases. If you are using a SQL 2000 database, the host name will be the same regardless if you connecting via Enterprise Manager or your web application. For SQL 2005 databases, the host name is slightly modified, please contact support@adhost.com for this information.
    • Lastly, Adhost recommends using OLEDB connection strings. How to create a DSN-less connection, click here for more info.
