Spring is around the corner and for gardeners it's time to 'Dig In'. What better place to start than the Point Defiance Flower and Garden Show. Quick information about exhibits, sponsors, events and vendors is available at their new website www.ptdefianceflowershow.com - plus, you can easily purchase advance tickets to the show and related events using their online ticket form. Oh...did we mention that Adhost designed and grew this site for them? |

We know that it sometimes seems as if no one is doing anything about the ongoing problem of spam and virus email, so we thought we ought to share an update with you. First, note that the total number of email messages we handle continues to rise dramatically. Two years ago we were handling about 150,000 message per day. One year ago we were handling about 1.5 million per day. As of March 1st, 2005, we are handling almost 5 million email messages per day. We have expended a large amount of time and equipment to keep ahead of these increases, and our mail servers are currently having no problems with the additional load. We have set up our mail "cluster" such that we can add new equipment quickly and easily to handle additional load or to address equipment failure, and all without adversely affecting mail delivery. To control the amount of mail that reaches your mailbox, we use several lists of IP numbers which are "known" spam sources, (some maintained by third parties, some maintained by Adhost), to block as much spam/virus email as possible before it can reach your mailbox with minimal risk of losing wanted mail. This is currently blocking about 70% of all email received. Additionally, about 10% of all messages are "bounced" each day because of bad domain names, bad DNS, or other reasons. Then another 10% or so are discarded because the user they were sent to does not exist, and you have decided to throw them away by specifying "bit-bucket@mail.adhost.com" as their final recipient. So, even before your mail is sent to our spam/virus filtering system, 9 out of 10 messages are blocked as unwanted. Then, for those who have Adhost POP accounts, our filter marks or discards (according to your preference) about 25% of those remaining. Does this totally eliminate spam? Obviously not. But it certainly reduces it to a more manageable level. Adhost continues to look for additional ways to reduce unwanted email without affecting the email you DO want to receive. |
