Adhost announces upgraded Mail server architecture

Adhost is happy to announce that it has taken the next step in its mail server farm and divided mail processes up into a more distributed architecture. This division will allow for future seamless growth in our mail services.

We had been planning to implement this architecture change by Thanksgiving of this year. However, because an unexpected doubling of mail volume from about 2 million pieces of mail per day to about 4 million just before Halloween negatively impacted on our ability to handle mail, we moved that schedule up by several weeks. Fortunately, we had the systems purchased and largely configured when we saw the dramatic increase in volume.

With the migration from a single mail cluster to a NAT'ed group of clusters, we will easily be able to add capacity by dropping additional servers into whichever cluster may need it. The really beautiful part, of course, is that our customers don't have to change any settings in their mail clients to receive the benefit of more horse-power.

Please contact support@adhost.com if you have any questions about our upgraded mail architecture or systems.

New ICANN Policy On Domain Transfers

Starting 11/12/04, ICANN (the orginization in charge of domain name registrys) has a new policy regarding domain name transfers. Essentially if a request is made to transfer a domain from one registrar to another, an email confirmation request is sent to the admin contact of the registry. At that point the request can be denied or approved. If no confirmation is made either way, after 5 days the request is automattically processed. Though this is an attempted improvement (and there are benefits), there are also negatives. Scamming companies could attain business through unaproved transfer and domains could be possibly be stolen.

Adhost highly recommends that you lock your domain. If your domain was purchased through Adhost/Tucows/OpenSRS, what you need to do is to log in to your Adhost Control Panel go to "Manage Domain" and then login there. You can then lock the domain(s). If you then do want to transfer a domain, you will need to unlock it first.

OUCH Report

Major threat this month: Phishing has gone Wall Street. Securities regulators were warned on September 27, 2004 about phony email being sent by Smith Barney that were seeking account information from customers of the brokerage unit of Citigroup Inc. The solicitation is a fake, according to Securities and Exchange Commission officials. Read the full story here.
