Maintenance Window

Maintenance Window for edge1.adhost.com - Wednesday July 21st, 2004 from 1:00 AM to 2:00 AM.

Adhost is announcing an upcoming maintenance window from approximately 1:00 AM to 2:00 AM, Wednesday July 21st, 2004. During the maintenance window, we will be completing the upgrade of one of our upstream connections. This will require us to move our BGP session from the old circuit to the new. We will also take advantage of this brief to upgrade the Cisco IOS software version on that router to the latest release. Although we will make every effort to minimize the impact to our customers, connections that use this router for inbound traffic will see approximately 2-5 minutes of downtime during the service window while BGP updates propagate across the Internet.

We appreciate your business and look forward to serving your current and future hosting and data storage needs. As always, our goal is to minimize any downtime your site will experience. Please email any questions or concerns to webmaster@adhost.com. Thank you.

Sincerely,

The Adhost Webmaster Team

Online Privacy Act

California's Online Privacy Protection Act came into effect July 1, 2004. If anyone from California visits your site and notifies you that you're not compliant, you have 30 days to become compliant or else you may be looking at possible fines or even potential law suits.

The Act applies only to "commercial" Web sites and online services so if you're not selling anything, you may not have to worry. Also, web hosting companies, ISPs, email broadcast firms, and database firms can't be sued for carrying someone else's non-compliant site or email. However, we at Adhost recommend that all of our commercial clients comply with the new Act by making the link to your privacy policy clearly visible on your web site.

Search News

Being "number one" is a good thing, especially in terms of getting your company into the top slot of pay-per-click (PPC) search engines Google and Overture. But, is there really a big difference in traffic between the number one and number two positions? Apparently, the answer to that question is a resounding "yes".

Atlas DMT recently performed a study of thousands of search terms on both Google and Overture and discovered that there is a difference of about 10 times the potential traffic between the number one and number ten search position rankings. In Google there is a 40% decrease in potential traffic from the number one to number two rankings, indicating that it could make a huge difference in your web site's traffic if you're not the top bidder for a term. In Overture there is a more gradual decline in potential traffic from the number one position.

Of course, not everyone can nab the top spot in the search rankings, and for many advertisers the cost involved is not worth the traffic in terms of ROI. Each marketer must determine their own customized strategy to determine their optimal cost and position for each keyword in each search engine.
