ADHOST DATA CENTER MOVE

As we mentioned last month, Adhost will be relocating our offices and data center from First Mutual Center in Bellevue to Fisher Plaza in downtown Seattle. The moving process will begin around July 1st and will be completed methodically over a three-month time period.

We expect to have a preliminary moving schedule prepared by the end of this month. Clients who are co-locating their own server at Adhost will need to review their proposed time-slot in the schedule and respond within 15 days if they have a conflict. If we do not hear back from each co-lo client within 15 days of receiving your notice, we will assume the proposed schedule works for you and proceed accordingly. We will be as flexible as possible in accommodating your scheduling needs; however, the moving schedule has limited flexibility due to the constraints of our deadline.

Stay tuned for additional details in the weeks ahead…

NEW EMAIL FILTERS

Due to the increase in unsolicited commercial email (UCE, a.k.a. "spam") and virus attacks, Adhost will now offer filter options for each clients' POP email account. We expect to have the new system in place in the next few weeks, so watch your email for notification and instructions.

You will be able to customize the way in which UCE and virus-infected email is handled via your Adhost control panel. Default settings will be available for common choices like "Normal", "Permissive", "Aggressive", etc. If none of the defaults seem right, you will be able to individually adjust each setting.

Initially, we will mark all UCE as spam (but send it anyway), and block all viruses (a notice will be sent to both the sender and recipient of a virus blocked). If a virus is blocked, a copy is kept for 30 days, just in case the original is needed.

Please note that the spam/virus filtering will only be done for POP email accounts on our mail server. If email aliasing produces an ultimate destination that is not on our mail server, no filtering will be done for that recipient.

Look for additional details in the coming weeks. Should you have any questions in the mean time, please contact support@adhost.com for information.

SPRING CLEANING YOUR COMPUTER

It's that time of year again for spring-cleaning! When was the last time you backed up your Web site? Is your email inbox squeaky clean? Here are a few helpful tips to keep things in a good working order.

  1. Download a clean copy of your Web site. It's always a good idea to have a copy of your Web content and these copies should be stored on your local machine and/or on a disk. While Adhost does backup your site nightly and store the tape off-site, we still recommend that you keep a clean copy of your site as a precaution. (Note: If you require Adhost to restore your site charges may apply.)
  2. Clean out those old files in your Web site directory. We recommend cleaning out all unnecessary files in your directory to improve its organization and conserve space.
  3. Email cleaning and back ups. While keeping all your email from years past my be helpful for future reference, it is always a good practice to clean out those trash bins and create a backup of old mail to be stored on disk. These backups can be lifesavers if your disk drive fails or a system is wiped out (knock on wood). The process to create a backup of your email files depends on the email software you are using. If you use the Outlook calendar you may also choose to back it up as well.
    • For Outlook - Open a mail folder, then go to File, Archive. This will allow you to create a .pst file that can be saved to disk. You may also want to clean out your Trash folder by going to Tools, Options and clicking on the Other tab. You may also choose the Auto Archive button, which will give you the option of cleaning out your Trash folder.
    • Creating a backup copy of a folder. On the File menu, click Import and Export. In the wizard, click Export to a file, and then click Next. Click Personal Folder File. Follow the rest of the steps in the wizard.
    • Outlook Express - To compact and backup email folders select an email folder. On the File menu, point to Folder, and then click Compact. To back up the folder, find the folder file, and then copy it to a backup folder, floppy disk, or network drive. Outlook Express e-mail folders have a .dbx extension (for example, "Sent Items.dbx").

While you're in cleaning mode, be sure to update your Adhost account with any changes such as contact person, billing address, payment method, etc. The easiest way to do this is by accessing your Adhost Client Control Panel at http://client.adhost.com.
